How to Keep a Dog From Escaping

!9#: How to Keep a Dog From Escaping

There are hundreds of dogs that go missing every year in the United States. In order to make this number decrease, it is important for dog owners to take the proper precautions when it comes to having a dog outside. Some people, who work or are out of the home all day, prefer to leave their dogs outside so they can play and get some fresh air during the daytime hours. It is especially important for these owners to make sure they have a good, protected area, so their dog does not escape. There are three general ways dog owners can make sure their dog does not escape from their property. The first is to install invisible CT fencing around the area with a shock collar to train the dog not to go away from the marked area. Secondly, there is just normal CT fences that would be made especially for the individual dog, depending on its' size and height. Finally, there is the option of specialized dog training. The following paragraphs provide a more in-depth look at each method previously introduced.

1. Using a shock collar to train a dog into staying in the designated area is a good way to ensure the dog does not leave the property. This type of training works well with most dogs as many do not like being shocked, so many will just stay on the property. The one thing owners must be mindful of is whether or not the dog still tries to wander after getting used to the shock. In these cases, the owner may want to try a different method or be alright with increasing the voltage in the shock collar. This type of training does not work with all dogs, something that is important to note.

2. Having a special barrier set up around the perimeter of the house will most likely keep many types of dogs from trying to escape. Most American dog owners use this method to keep their canine on the property. It is important to make sure that the barrier is high enough so the dog cannot possibly jump over it.

3. There are special dog training classes in which a professional will help train the dog to stay on the property without a shock collar or any kind of physical barrier. In some cases this is successful, but it is probably best to make sure at least one person is home to keep an eye on the dog in case they do decide to wander off the property. Usually this technique is used when owners want to sit outside or do some yard work and the dog can come out with the owner without a collar or physical barrier. It is probably not a good idea to leave a dog outside all day with no supervision and no shock collar or barrier.

Dog owners need to be careful with their dogs outside, so their pet does not escape or go missing. It is important to take the steps necessary to ensure the safety of your dog by selecting a method that is best for your dog to keep it on your property.

Electronic Dog Collars

!9# Electronic Dog Collars

If you are having no success in training your dog to stop undesirable behavior like persistent barking, digging and feces eating, modern electronic dog training collars can be used to correct these problems in a humane way. There are many types of these dog collars but they all serve to correct bad habits. Some of these electronic devices include shock dog collars, wireless fences with shock collars, citronella collars, vibration collars, sonic and ultrasonic collars. Electronic pet training collars also come with or without a remote control.

The electric shock collar is the most popular electronic dog training collar. The phrase 'electric shock collar' does sound cruel and inhumane. But the electric shock is applied incrementally. If you were to apply the electric shock to yourself, you would find that the shock emitted by the first setting on the collar is barely detectable. The electric shock collar is usually used to stop a dog from barking. You should understand that many dogs do need to bark. Train your dog to bark in a designated area or room for a short period of time if they need to. Most shock collars have a vibration only mode. Vibration collars vibrate on your dog's neck when he or she needs correction. The vibration is similar to the sensation you get if you set your cell phone to vibrate and the phone rings while in your pocket.

The citronella scent collar does not emit any shock. Instead, it sprays the scent of citronella when your dog barks. Citronella scent collars are generally not as effective as shock collars when it comes to controlling barking. However, citronella collars are extremely effective if your dog eats his own or other dogs' feces and you want to completely stop the disgusting behavior. Bear in mind that you do need to factor in the cost of replacement canisters if the citronella runs out.

Ultrasonic and sonic collars are another effective way to train your unruly dog. Ultrasonic collars emit a very high pitch sound that humans cannot hear but dogs can. Sonic collars use sound waves that are audible to humans. Ultrasonic collars can be tricky to use at first because you cannot hear whether they are working. Some sonic collars also have a vibration mode.

A wireless fence is used to contain your dog and to train him or her not to leave a predefined area. The fence will go around a perimeter and your dog will wear a special collar. When your pet crosses the invisible wireless fence line a mild corrective stimulation will be applied to your dog.

Although there has been quite a controversy on the use of dog electronic collars they are considered safe to use. As long as the instructions are followed and all the different features are used properly there is no harm involved in the use of these collars.

PetSafe Instant Fence Wireless Invisible Fence

!9# PetSafe Instant Fence Wireless Invisible Fence

What is an invisible fence, and when should it be used?

The Instant Fence system was originally designed to be used in RVs. The idea was to give pet owners who already had pets being contained by an wired fence system a portable system to take with them when camping or on vacation. It was never originally intended to be a replacement for the 'underground' (wired) fences. However, because of its 'Plug & Play' functionality, the Instant Fence quickly became a favorite item of pet owners.

Recently the Instant Fence received a significant upgrade. In the past, it only came with a rather large, 1 level receiver collar that was best suited for medium to larger dogs due to its size and strength. PetSafe wisely changed the receiver to an adjustable 6 level collar and reduced its size by 20%. This made this
system much more beneficial, as now pets as small as 8 lbs and as large as 100 lbs or more can be contained by this system.

The Instant Fence and its receiver collar - the PIF-275 are the only PetSafe Invisible Fence items that are not interchangeable with any other PetSafe system. The reason for this is that they work in exactly the opposite way from an 'underground' (wired) system. When activated, the PIF-300 emits a radio signal up to 90 feet in every direction in a perfect circle.

The PIF-275 receiver worn by the pet is always hearing this signal and therefore it does not activate. However once the dog walks out of the zone and the collar loses this signal, that is when the receiver wakes up and begins to correct the pet via stimulation through 2 contact points on the Receiver Collar that touch your pet's neck.

With an underground fence, the only place that the signal exists is around the buried boundary wire. Once the pet walks up to that wire and the receiver hears the signal, it then wakes up and activates.
So with our Instant Fence, the receiver collar needs to always hear the signal; otherwise it activates.
With our 'underground' (wired) systems, the receiver collar never wants to hear the signal; if it does, then it activates.

The two main drawbacks to our Instant Fence are:

1. It has a maximum range of 90 feet in any direction.

2. The boundary shape cannot be adjusted. It can only transmit in a perfect circle in every direction. If you wish to increase the boundary, you may use multiple transmitters and overlap the signal to create a boundary of 180 feet in every direction but keep in mind that the transmitters must be indoors and out of the weather. Overall the Instant Fence is a great product for someone who needs simple installation and is not concerned with its limited adjustability.

If you are serious about training your little pup, you should consider purchasing the petsafe invisible fence.

Invisible Dog Fence - Is Training Your Dog Difficult?

!9# Invisible Dog Fence - Is Training Your Dog Difficult?

An invisible dog fence must not be used as replacement for actual dog training. In order to make your invisible dog fence effective in teaching your dog time and patience is necessary. Aside from that, you need to follow strict rules and guidelines to make the invisible dog fence system work effectively.

Using the invisible dog fence system for training your dog can either be done on your own or with a help of a professional dog trainer. However, even with professional help, you will still carry much of the burden of executing training guidelines for your dog whenever the trainer is not around.

Training the dog to recognize an invisible dog fence is both time-consuming and stretches your patience. However, this task is much easier when you are well-bonded together and the dog listens to your instructions.

This training system could span from 2-6 weeks, depending on how fast your dog can learn.

You can initially setup the training by placing small red flags along where you have buried the cable. This will serve as physical reminder for your dog on where its boundaries are. Make sure to tape the prongs on the collar to prevent sending out shocks to your dog.

Then, put on your dog's leash whenever they go out within the fence boundaries. A warning beep will start off whenever it goes beyond the area, so this will ensure the dog stays within the boundaries. When this happens, pull off the dog right away and praise him if he obeys.

Do this exercise throughout the day so the dog can get accustomed to this setup and will immediately back off when the warning beep is activated.

Once you have allowed the dog to be acquainted with this system, you can now remove the tape from the prongs on the collar to allow the shock. Although the shock is not painful to the dog it is enough to get their attention and alert them to turn back.

It is comparable to experiencing a static shock and then you come in contact with any form of metal. You need to make necessary adjustments for the amount of shock your dog will receive, according to its size and level of response.

However, every dog owner must be aware that not all shock collars can be adjusted so make sure to purchase those with adjustable settings. And whenever your dog goes out, check the collar to correct the shock level, just in case it reaches the border.

Make sure not to remove the dog's leash simultaneous with the removal of the collar prongs' cover. Keep the leash on your dog whenever he explores the area within the invisible dog fence.
